Understanding the difference between Style and Fashion can help you save money and create your dream wardrobe.
Style vs. Fashion
The two words seem so similar yet carry a very different meaning. Often times used interchangeably, style and fashion are very much based on personal preference yet in terms of a wardrobe, one can last much longer than the other.
What is Style?
Simply put, style is how you put your outfits together to create a specific look whether for a special occasion, event or just in your everyday life. Style is all about you and how you choose to represent yourself through your wardrobe.
Style takes time to establish and understand. It is not something you are born but rather developed over time, through experiences and by having an understanding of who you are. Most importantly, style is what you want it to be. It only needs to make sense to you. The clothes you wear should be ones that you love, feel comfortable in, make you feel confident and adhere to your lifestyle.
Lifestyle is a point I get hung up on and many times need to revisit. I need to remember that the clothes that I love may not (at this point in time) make sense for my lifestyle and I need to table them for the moment. It doesn’t mean that I will never wear them but it means that I need to forgo them for now and invest in pieces that I both love and make sense for my lifestyle. For me, this is huge for building a quality wardrobe.
What is Fashion?
While style is personal and has longevity, fashion is broader and quick. Fashion encompasses current trends and fads and often comes and goes as quickly as the seasons. It does not give you the option to choose, but rather tells you what is currently “in”. This is not necessarily a bad thing but you do not want to build your wardrobe around fashion as it can get costly, quickly.
Combining Style and Fashion
Style and Fashion each have their place. Your closet should be crafted around your personal style. This will improve as you grow, personally. Investment pieces will never go out of style and you will always feel confident when you put it on, because it is you, a form of self-expression. Mixing in current fashion trends is a fun way to liven up your looks, but will never replace them. When curating a look, start with your personal Style and add in some current Fashion. This will create a look that is timeless, that is you, while simultaneously fun, edgy and current.
